Council of Constance

Concile of Constance

EXHIBITION: This year marks the 600 anniversary of the The Concile of Constance 1414 – 2014

The Concile in Constance was one of the great church-political events in the Middle Ages, ending the scandal of the three-popes-controversy. Like Vatican II it signalled a new ecumenical era to be dominated by a renovated and even reformed church promoting ecclesial Conciliarism and Papal supremacy. The council was called by one of the anti-popes, John XXIII and was held from 16 November 1414 to 22 April 1418 in Constance, Germany. According to Joseph McCabe, the council was attended by roughly 29 cardinals, 100 “learned doctors of law and divinity,” 134 abbots, and 183 bishops and archbishops.

However, the “Roman” pope, Martin V, who won the day in the so-called Western Schism, never codified the results and in the end the concile petered out. Soon after his election in November 1417 he asserted the absolute authority of the papal office, thus directly paving the way for the reformation in the 16th century.

Another terrible result of the concile was its condemnation of Jan Hus, who, summoned to Constance under a letter of safe conduct, was nevertheless found guilty and turned over to a secular court.

The exhibition will be housed in the original building, where the Concile took place, the so-called Konzilgebeüde, which is located down by Lake Constance (Boden See).  As part of the celebrations of the anniversary a medieval herbal garden will be planted in front of the building to the landside.
