The Others – Keynote for Leeds Medieval Congress 2017

Noah’s Ark British Library, Add MS 47682

This summer Leeds will be welcoming a host of medievalists focusing on “The Others”; and by that is not just meant the ghosts of dead, white males! Preliminary programme offers a tantalising first view of what is poised to become a major event focusing on those on the periphery or even the outside.

Just to give an inkling: here is a list of the Keynote Lectures:

The Other Part of the World for Late Medieval Latin Christendom
By Felicitas Schmieder, Historisches Institut, Universität Hamburg.

Other Sexualities: The ‘Natural’ and the ‘Unnatural’ in Medieval French Ovidian Literature
By Sylvia Hout, Pembroke College, University of Cambridge.

‘Drawing Boundaries: Inclusion and Exclusion in Medieval Islamic Societies
By Nicholas P. Jaspert, Historisches Seminar, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität, Heidelberg. (To be confirmed)

Gardens and Gardening in Early Medieval Spain and Portugal. (Annual Early Medieval Lecture)
By Wendy Davies, Formerly University College, London

Outside Noah’s Ark: Sympathy and Survival as the Waters Rise. Annual Medieval Academy of America Lecture
By Jeffrey J. Cohen, Department of English, George Washington University, Washington DC
