Dreaming of walking along the ramparts of a massive castle form the 11th century with a view over the Donau? Now the time has come.

Burg Geifenstein in St. Andrä-Wördern in the region of Tulln in Austria was built in the 11th century. At this point it played a very important part in the defence- and communicationsystem along the river Donau. It was first mentioned in 1135 as owned by the bishop in Passau. In 1247 it was heavily renovated. In 1529 the Turks besieged and conquered the castle. Afterwards it was restored, but it never gained the same political and defensive role, it used to possess. At this time its very important archive was totally destroyed.

Later, in the 16th century, it was used as a notorious prison. In 1807 – 09 it was refurbished in the Romantic neo-gothic style by the prince of Lichtenstein. His descendants continued to bring “romantic” artifacts to the place, turning it into a “proper” medieval dream.

Since the 60s it has been in the ownership of a local businessman, who until 2006 ran a restaurant there. However, a fire put a stop on the business and since then it has been placed on the market. Last price cited was € 3.5 millions.

The property is protected and offers around 500 m2 to any handy-man with a deep pocket and some serious medieval dreams.
