The Bible and its Reception

De Gruyter is setting new standards in the field of biblical reception

The initial contribution is the internationally acclaimed Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception (EBR), a reference work which provides a comprehensive overview of an extensive range of biblical and religious topics as well as their reception.

Based on EBR, the series Handbooks of the Bible and Its Reception (HBR) offers broad and in-depth analyses of selected issues found in EBR, focusing on particular themes, regions, figures, and historical contexts.

The series Studies of the Bible and Its Reception (SBR) is comprised of monographs and collected volumes that explore the reception history of the Bible in a wide variety of academic and cultural contexts.

The Journal of the Bible and Its Reception (JBR) promotes the study of the reception of the Bible in terms of both methodology and content.

These innovative publications are new venues in which De Gruyter is expanding and deepening its longstanding expertise in biblical studies. They build on a long tradition of prestigious journals, such as Zeitschrift für die alttestamentliche Wissenschaft (ZAW), Zeitschrift für die neutestamentliche Wissenschaft (ZNW) and their respective book series.

Of special interest is the Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its ReceptionThe Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception (EBR) is a multi-faceted reference work which covers biblical and religious topics as well as their reception in an array of religious, cultural and academic disciplines and fields. Its content is the result of an interdisciplinary approach, transcending a purely theological perspective, to include fields ranging from classical, literary and religious studies to archaeology, music, visual arts and film.

In addition, the encyclopedia is interreligious (Judaism, Christianity, Islam and other Religions) from the aspect of both its content and its authors. EBR’s authors (currently more than 2500) come from and work in over 55 countries and are members of faculties, institutes and acclaimed academic institutions worldwide. This ensures the international character of the entries and the up-to-date quality of the articles.

A team of 40 editors and a rigorous review process also guarantee the high standard of the material. Currently, over 8000 articles have been published and 20,000 are in preparation.

EBR is a resource tool for scholars in biblical, cultural and religious studies and related fields but also accessible to general readers interested in the Bible. It is available in both a print and an electronic version. EBR Print is multi-volume set. EBR Online is an online database.
