On Gotland, the second largest island of the Baltic Sea, one finds an overwhelming number of important and well-preserved objects of art and cultural history. Ninety-two churches, mostly with their medieval interior, 230 medieval stone houses as well as the ruins of the churches in Visby bear witness from the busy life of the merchants and the material and cultural wealth of the island. The conference “Gotland – Cultural Center in the Hanseatic League” approaches new research strategies and results, which will be under discussion among an international and interdisciplinary group of professional scientists. Researchers from Sweden, Germany, the Baltic States, Poland and Russia emphasis with their contributions the transnational coinage of Gotland, while historians, art historians, archaeologists, anthropologists and curators will focus on transdisciplinary issues.
