The Scrovegni Chapel, dedicated to St. Mary of the Charity, was painted by Giotto between 1303 and 1305 upon the commission of Enrico degli Scrovegni. This initiative led to a climate in Padua where a series of important artists: Pietro and Giuliano da Rimini, Guariento, Giusto de’ Menabuoi, Jacopo Avanzi, Altichiero da Zevio and Jacopo da Verona were invited to contribute to the artistic legacy of the city of Padua and the reigning dukes (the Carraras).

This guide explores this artistic development paying particular attention to the strong new elements that made fourteenth century Padua a milestone in the path leading from the late Middle Agesto the origins of the Renaissance.
