Kilmartin Castle in Western Scotland for sale
Kilmartin Castle is a semi-fortified,medieval residence with a private situation to the north of the small Argyll village of Kilmartin, with excellent views of the surrounding countryside. It was built as a variation of the popular Z-plan, consisting of a main block lying north and south, with round towers projecting from the south-west and north-east corners. A small secondary stair-tower rises part way along the west front.
The SW tower contains the main stair with a service stair contained in a semi-circular projection from the hall. The other tower contains a series of bathrooms. The entrance leads into a vaulted passage which links the main stair to the kitchen, dining room and store, which are all vaulted. On the first floor there is the great hall and a bedroom with en suite bathroom. On the upper floor are two further bedrooms with en suite facilities. Kilmartin Castle is approached over a gravel driveway, which ends in a large in a large parking and turning area at the front of the castle. There are large sweeping lawns flanked by mature conifer trees.
Kilmartin has a post office, church, hotel, museum and a primary school, all within walking distance and nearby Lochgilphead provides secondary education, as well as shopping facilities. Lochgilphead has a golf course and swimming pool.
