Medieval London and the World

Medievalists are not only blessed with an astounding range of written sources touching upon the history of Medieval London. The archaeological finds are really astounding. Conference in London aims to shed light on the international context of this vibrant international city.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the London Medieval Society as a forum for scholars and students of the middle ages from across disciplinary and geographic boundaries. To celebrate the success of the LMS we are hosting an international conference at a London venue that will be announced later this year. The CFP for ‘Medieval London and the World’ can be found here and details for speakers and delegates will be posted on this page as it becomes available. We welcome proposals for papers, sessions, roundtables, and workshops.

Keynote Speakers:

  • Prof. Julia Boffey (Queen Mary Univ. of London)
  • Prof. David Carpenter (King’s College London)
  • Prof. Matthew Davies (Institute of Historical Research)
  • Prof. Vanessa Harding (Birkbeck College, Univ. of London)
  • Prof. Sheila Lindenbaum (Indiana Univ. Bloomington)

The provisional programme also includes:

  • Session and workshop of the AHRC-funded project ‘England’s Immigrants 1330-1550’
  • Session ‘The Archaeology of Medieval Travel’ & hands-on session at the Museum of London Guided visit to the Museum of London’s Medieval Gallery
  • Guided visit and exhibition at The National Archives

We welcome proposals for papers, sessions, roundtables and workshops (Deadline 01.01.2015)

Topics may include: Politics & Diplomacy between London and Europe, Asia, Africa, or the Americas; International Trade Networks; Travel and Pilgrimage to/from London; Cultural Interactions; Textual Culture & Literature; Playwrights & Theatre; Medieval Urban Life, Space and Place; London & the Papacy; Mapping & Geography. Contributions involving artefacts or manuscripts held in London collections are also sought after as the conference will include visits to London museums, libraries, and historic sites.).
