Over the years Antonio Gallardo Ballart  gradually put together a collection of brilliant and incomparable medieval art. Thanks to his generosity and trust, we are able to enjoy a conscientiously prepared selection of these works. This acquisition constitutes the most outstanding contribution to the medieval collection over the past few years. In the near future, these pieces will come to form part of the permanent itinerary through the Museum’s exhibition of Romanesque and Gothic Art.

The selection includes examples of Romanesque mural painting and, above all, of Gothic panel painting from the XII to the XVI centuries. A great part of the pieces are of Catalan origin, with figures like Serra brothers, Lluís Borrassà and Bernat Martorell.  Constituting the remainder are examples from the rest of the Hispanic world, like the fragment from the Abbey of San Pedro de Arlanza and the panel associated with Nicolás Francés.

The acquisition constitutes another token of the role civil society in general and private collectors in particular have played in building up our collections at the Museu Nacional.
