This scientific meeting is the first of three major events planned by the research group behind MARGEC
The objective of this project is to shed light on the material life of mendicant convents in Central Europe in the Middle Ages and Early Modern period. More concretely the group aims to identify the mechanisms of the “beggar economy” – in contrast to those which characterised the more traditional religious institutions.
This conference aims to present an overview of
1) How much represented the property and income related to land
2) The spatial distribution of these properties
3) In what sense did the brothers own this property – usufruct or full ownership, tenure,
4) What proportion of these assets and income was the result of donations? And what was the result of planned acquisition?
or on the contrary acquisitions planned and deliberate ?
5) What external agents were involved in the management?
6) What management practices were implemented?
Papers of (30 minutes) might take the form of case studies or other material hitherto not published.
They will be published (Presses de l’Université Blaise – Pascal or Presses University of Rennes).
Proposals for papers (title, keywords and summary of about 1000 characters in french or English may sent to marie-madeleine@decevins.fr , jluc.fray@univ-bpclermont.fr and viallet.ludovic@wanadoo.fr

MARGEC is an acronym constructed from Marginality, Economy and Christianity: The material life in mendicant convents in Central Europe c. 1220 – c. 1550.
It is managed by Marie-Madeleine de Cevins and supported by l’Agence Nationale de la Recherche. It is an interdisciplinary and international project gathering nearly 20 scholars. The object is to analyze and the discourse and economic practices of the male mendicant friaries in Central Europe – Bohemia, Moravia, Poland, and Hungary within their medieval limits. The primary object is to explore to what extent voluntary poverty was an important factor in the socio-economic regulation of the economy through stimulating the circulation of goods for salvation.
