Every other year a group of scholars organize a multidisciplinary conference on medievalism in the post-Middle Ages, MAMO. The third will be held in Manchester in July 2017
MAMO 3 – the Middle Ages in the Modern World
Mancehster University
28.06.2017 – 01.07.2017
Call for Papers:
Submission of proposals for panels, roundtables, and individual papers are invited by 30.09.2016. Panels can consist of three short papers (20 minutes) or four of fifteen minutes’ duration; roundtables should consist of no more than six speakers. Abstracts and proposals should not exceed 250 words and should be sent, as attachments in Word, to mamo.conference@manchester.ac.uk.
Confirmed details at present are: keynote addresses from Chris Jones (St Andrews) and Jeffrey Jerome Cohen (George Washington University); cultural events including a production of Lavinia Greenlaw’s A Double Sorrow at Manchester Cathedral; an in-conversation event with author Alan Garner; poetics of medievalism round table with poets Lavinia Greenlaw, Jane Draycott, Matthew Francis, and others, and a season of medievalist film at HOME (homemcr.org).
As the title suggests, MAMO aims to explore the continued return to, and relevance of, the Middle Ages in the modern world, and why the period continues to attract audiences and scholars. In particular, its interdisciplinary focus is designed to explore a range of areas, from popular culture to public history, from science to advertising, and even legal frameworks and political rhetoric. Given the popularity of medievalism as a growing discipline, and the enthusiastic fantastic reception of the two previous conferences, we are expecting a wide audience from a range of fields and disciplines including History, Literature, Film & Television, Video Games, Performing Arts, Drama, Languages, Museum Curation and more besides.
The 2017 MAMO conference is being organised by Anke Bernau, David Matthews, and James Paz.
